Surat Thani –

Bodies of a Thai-Indian billionaire couple were taken for autopsy yesterday morning, June 5th, after being believed to have drowned in a swimming pool of a hotel in Koh Tao, Surat Thani province on Friday evening, June 4th.

Officials from the Koh Tao Police Station along with medical officers from the Koh Tao Hospital arrived at the scene after being given reports that two tourists were injured at the pool of the hotel.

Rakeshwar Sachathamakul, 59, and his wife Anshoo, 55, were lying next to the pool, barely breathing. Medical officers then performed CPR before taking them to the hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, they were both pronounced dead on the way to the hospital according to Koh Tao Police.

An initial investigation revealed that the couple were Thai-Indian nationals who own a billion-baht business with five-star hotels in Phuket in the eastern provinces. According to their son’s statement, the family of three was on a vacation to Koh Tao. Before the incident, he reportedly went for a walk around the beach while his parents were swimming in the pool of the hotel.

When he came back, he discovered that they were reportedly drowning in the pool. He, therefore, rushed to inform the hotel staff for help. The staff then performed first aid and called emergency responders before a team of doctors at Koh Tao Hospital and volunteers came to save the lives of the father and mother but they were unable to make it.

Police Colonel Kriangkrai Kraikaew, chief of the Koh Tao police, said that the police found no traces of a struggle or any other signs of foul play at the scene. Colonel Kriagkrai stated that the couple had some underlying health conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, and obstructive sleep apnea that likely contributed to the situation.

Closed-circuit television cameras at the hotel had not been working for several months for maintenance during the Covid-19 outbreak, according to the hotel management. Investigators continued the investigation while their bodies are to be examined at the Institute of Forensic Medicine, Police Hospital later today to ensure multiple doctors and experts’ opinions are brought to the case.

TPN media notes that the situation has driven furious discussion online as Koh Tao has had a history of what some call “mysterious” deaths under questionable circumstances.

The son of the couple, Ratish Sachathamakul, 34, has stated that he also believes it was a tragic accident and that the Koh Tao police had handled the situation professionally, despite speculation online.
