Thailand-
The following is a weekly feature article looking at this same time period LAST year in Pattaya and Thailand news.
This weekly feature takes a look back at news from the same period last year (and sometimes different time windows, such as six months or three months) to see how things have changed, following up on the progression of stories, as well as look at potentially broken promises or things that didn’t take place as promised in Pattaya and Thailand.
As we publish dozens of stories a week this is a quick way for people to take a look at what the biggest stories were a year ago, as chosen by our editorial team, and how they impact us today and relate to current news. They are in no particular order of importance, however, are in order of publication. This week, we cover the THIRD week of May 2020, from Sunday, May 17th, 2020 to Saturday, May 23rd, 2020. They are roughly in order of publication.
1. Malls re-open with strict rules
As a comparison to what the Covid-19 rules look like this year to last year, here is what the malls looked like last year during the opening. They haven’t closed currently during this recent round of Covid-19 and the rules have slightly eased from this list last year.

2. Pattaya City Mayor and officials inspect beaches that were closed last year
This year they are technically “open for exercise” although enforcement on what this means varies by day. Pattaya Beach tends to be strict, with officials ordering people off the sand, although some other beaches are less enforced.
Pattaya City Mayor and other officials inspect beaches, will remain strictly closed for now
3. Two months of entertainment venues closed…could this year hit the same mark?
We will hit two months of entertainment venue closures, if they stay closed, on June 10th. Unfortunately, that looks likely at this time due to the situation with Covid-19 that is still ongoing in Thailand.
4. Massage shops push to re-open
Unfortunately, they remain closed currently in Chonburi also this year. The closure of massage shops is a provincial/regional closure and not a national closure, meaning the Governor could lift this at any time if he chooses. The closure of entertainment venues nationwide is a national restriction set by the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration and the Thai government.
5. Pattaya City Council approves building incinerator on Koh Larn
One year later, it still hasn’t been built. The original plan was for it to be completed by April of this year The project has, according to city officials, been delayed due to Covid-19 related reasons as well as issues with independent contractors.
6. American man, previously arrested twice, arrested again
He was reportedly finally sent home/deported/allowed to leave after this incident and is back in the USA.
