Pattaya Police commemorates Krom Luang Chumphon in respect of “Abhakara Memorial Day” today

Pattaya –

Pattaya Police have staged a tribute ceremony to show respect for the “Abhakara Memorial Day” or “Wan Arpakorn Day” today, May 19th, to commemorate and show gratitude to Admiral Prince Abhakara Kiartivongse, Prince of Chumphon (Krom Luang Chumphon), who was also recognized as “The Father of Royal Thai Navy”.

Amphon Kaewsang from the Pattaya Police Station led Pattaya police and officers to hold the commemoration on the memorial day of the passing of Krom Luang Chumphon by making merit and placing remembrance wreaths at the Admiral Prince Abhakara statue to honor him and his contribution to Thailand.

Krom Luang Chumphon was a son of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and has been respected by a lot of navy mariners and fishermen nationwide. He finished his graduation from naval science in England.

Upon his return to Siam in 1900, the prince, who was honored as Lieutenant Commander, began to work and started to develop the Royal Siamese navy in order to achieve the highest level to the standard of western navies, educating the Thai navy sailors to have knowledge, expertise, and ability to be educators and commanders without having to rely on foreigners.

In 1907, he established the first mechanical engineering school to provide education to officers on the machinery of naval ships and factories in order to replace foreign workers.

In 1922, he saw that Sattahip Bay was a strategic spot for the establishment of a naval base and, therefore, offered royal land in Sattahip in order to build the present-day naval facilities.

The ceremony followed all Covid-19 related measures and practices, including mask-wearing, temperature checks, and limiting the numbers of those present.
