Phuket car crash brings down NINE power poles and causes local power outages for hours

Phuket –

An unidentified male driver has sustained minor injuries after he crashed his car into a power pole in Phuket City before bringing down an additional eight power poles which caused a localized blackout for hours. The total cost of damage to the power poles is about a hundred thousand baht, according to the provincial electric authority.  A motorbike driver who was driving behind the car crash also sustained injuries.

The Phuket City Police was notified of the accident at around 2:30 P.M. on Trang Road in the Talad Yai sub-district of Phuket city.

Police and TPN media arrived at the scene to find a chaotic scene, with damaged vehicles and nine power poles having fallen in the vicinity, blocking the road and causing some property damage.

The male driver, aged around 30, whose name was not given to the press, had sustained only minor injuries in the accident. A motorbike driver who was also on the road sustained moderate injuries after crashing while trying to avoid a falling power pole.

Staffers from the provincial electricity authority cut off the power while fixing and repairing the nine poles this afternoon. The road was temporarily closed to traffic and detours were set up due to the accident.

Witnesses told TPN media the car had lost control before crashing into a single power pole at high speed, which brought down an additional eight power poles. A motorbike driver, whose name was also not given, crashed while swerving to avoid falling electricity wires and beams.

Staffers from the Phuket Electricity Authority said it will take at least nine hours to repair and fix the fallen power poles. Work was still in progress as of press time.

The unidentified car driver who caused the accident did not release a statement to the press and will reportedly be interviewed by Phuket police to determine potential legal action once they are released from a hospital.
