Moderna Covid-19 vaccine given emergency use approval by Thai Food and Drug Administration

Thailand-

The Thai Food and Drug Administration announced this evening, May 13th, 2021, that they had officially granted emergency use approval to the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine.

The vaccine’s emergency use approval is valid for at least one year, effective as of today.

This is the fourth Covid-19 vaccine given emergency use approval in Thailand, following Sinovac, Astrazeneca, and Johson & Johnson. Moderna, however, will be primarily offered by the Thai Government Pharmaceuticals Organization to act as an intermediary between Moderna and private hospitals/organizations as Moderna does not sell to private organizations at this time.

Although the emergency use approval was given this evening, there is not a definitive timeline for when Moderna will be available at private hospitals in the country for purchase. Moderna will be an option for those who wish to pay who may not wish to register for a free Covid-19 vaccine, such as Sinovac or Astrazeneca.

The Thai Government has repeatedly said foreigners will be able to register and get a vaccine if they live in Thailand, although that process is still not clear and it will likely be several more weeks, if not longer before that process is clarified across the country.

As for Chonburi, Pattaya is set to start vaccinating local residents in earnest over the next few weeks and has also stated foreign ex-pats will be included, although the specifics over how one can register as a non-Thai national have also not yet been announced.
