Pattaya, Chonburi –

Strong winds and heavy rain brought down towering trees, construction barriers used to seal off construction sites, and electricity pylons in Pattaya and the Chonburi area early this morning (May 6th).

The storms hit around 3:00 A.M. and kept going for over an hour across the province, causing especially strong wind gusts along the coastlines, scattered heavy rains, sporadic flooding, consistent thunder and sheet lightning, and localized damage. Luckily there were no immediate reports of injuries from the sudden overnight storms, driven in part due to Covid-19 restrictions closing overnight businesses currently in the provincial area such as nightlife, markets, and stores.

The Pattaya City Electric Authority reported at 3:00 A.M. through their various media channels that the storm had caused blackouts in many areas of Pattaya as the strong winds had brought down power poles.

Pattaya City Law Enforcement reported at 4:00 A.M. via social media that heavy rain and strong winds near Jomtien beach had brought down a palm tree before hitting a power pole near a hotel and 7-11 on Central Jomtien Beach. Luckily, the 7-11 was closed due to Covid-19 restrictions and nobody was present during the incident.

Pictures sent to the Pattaya News by reader John W. showed damage to construction barriers set around construction sites and damage to billboards in the Soi Buakhao area.

Meanwhile, in Ban Bueng, a large, mature, tamarind tree which locals claimed is at least 100 years old had been pulled down by wind and temporarily blocked Road Number 344 to morning commuters.

Cleanup of the damages has taken place all morning as law enforcement and electrical authorities attempt to estimate the overall cost from the storms. We also covered earlier today that the Thai Meteorological Department has forecast that more storms are on the way.
