Thailand-
The following is our weekly feature in which we take a look at the top developing stories and things to follow over the past week. We are focusing on what is happening for the second week of April, ending April 17th, 2021.
As we publish dozens of stories a week, this allows our readers to get a quick glimpse of the most important stories taking place and to monitor and follow for the week ahead, as chosen by our editorial team.
They are in no particular order of importance.
1. Covid-19 situation continues to develop after a wild week
The Covid-19 situation in Thailand will be the number one story people are watching next week after a week of escalating situations coming primarily from Bangkok clusters stemming from entertainment venues that have slowly spread to many parts of the country. As a result, the Thai Government has shut down entertainment venues in 41 provinces, including Pattaya, marking the third time the lights of Pattaya’s famous entertainment venues have gone off in one year, drawing major concern from business owners.
2. Will we see an increase in speed in vaccines for Covid-19 due to the recent breakout?
After the recent breakout in Thailand discussed in the first of this week’s stories to watch, the second story to watch will be what appears to be an increase in speed in bringing vaccines to Thailand. Yesterday, April 9th, 2021, the Thai government confirmed they will be allowing private companies to bring in vaccines, which should speed up the process significantly. Additionally, a million more doses of Sinovac from China arrived today, April 10th.
3. A muted Songkran begins while some have concerns around Covid-19
Songkran, for the second year in a row, will be water-free although this year sees more freedom than last year which had widespread business closures, curfews, alcohol bans, and more. Due to the recent Covid-19 breakout stemming from Bangkok and many provinces setting in place quarantines for visitors from the capital it is expected that many fewer people will be traveling this year. This Songkran will be strictly traditional with all “fun” activities like parties, concerts, and water fights banned and 41 provinces have closed entertainment venues. This also comes among huge economic concerns due to the lack of travel and closures of entertainment.
4. Pattaya Kite Festival continues all next week
Despite the negative news around Covid-19, the Pattaya Kite Festival, which is outdoors and allows plenty of social distancing, will be running through all of Songkran on Pattaya Beach and everyone is welcome. Learn more below.
