A Nigerian national was arrested at a dormitory in the Ladprao area of Bangkok after allegedly being involved in a romance scam that targeted Thai women who had reportedly lost more than 370 million baht in total value.
The Immigration Police yesterday, April 7th, announced the arrest of the 60-year-old Nigerian suspect, whose name was only revealed to the press as Bertrand, following an arrest warrant accusing him of fraud, importing fake information into computer systems, and causing damage towards another person.
The arrest took place following a tip-off, stating that the foreigner always behaved suspiciously and did not interact with anyone in his apartment complex. According to the complex owner, the room where the suspect was staying was rented under a Thai woman’s name.
Immigration police visited the foreigner on a routine check and then asked for his passport which revealed that Bertrand had traveled to Thailand since July 27th, 2019, and had not extended his visa since.
A further investigation also exposed that he was wanted by the Thai Criminal Court for allegedly scamming Thai victims at more than 370 million baht in total value and had previously been arrested for similar allegations.
Bertrand is now detained at the Royal Thai Immigration Bureau for legal proceedings. Meanwhile, the Thai police are conducting further investigation to track down more alleged scammers who might be possibly involved.
