Today is Chakri Memorial Day, a Public Holiday in Thailand

Thailand –

April 6th each year marks the Chakri Memorial Day in Thailand to observe the founding and establishment of the great Chakri Dynasty in 1782 by King Rama I, who ascended the throne of Siam (now called Thailand) and moved the capital city to Bangkok from Thonburi.

The day is regarded as the anniversary of the Chakri Dynasty. In 1919, King Rama VI granted Royal Permission and set the date as a public holiday for all Thai citizens to commemorate the coronation of King Rama I along with all the following Kings of the Royal family.

The Chakri Memorial Day is significantly celebrated in the Royal family and all the government departments. Banks, schools, and all government offices, including Immigration, are closed. Other normal businesses may be open as usual and are unaffected by the celebrations.

The Royal family and Royal celebration are the main public attractions on the day. The King along with other royal family members organize a religious ceremony to pay tribute to his ancestors. He pays a visit to the Royal Pantheon, where statues of the previous kings of Chakri dynasty were located, and offers a wreath to pay his respects to his predecessors.

The day is not an alcohol sales ban day, however, as it is not a religious holiday.
