Chonburi –

A local man has provided a 36-table Chinese style banquet for ghosts at a cemetery in the Panthong district this week.

Mr. Tanawan Choti, 43, told local Thai media, “My mother told me that as her dying wish she wanted to give a free banquet for ghosts before she passed away so that she could dine with her friends and family that had also passed before her and they could welcome her to the other side.”

Mr. Tanawan’s mother passed away recently and he fulfilled her last wish earlier this week.

In Thailand, cemeteries are rare as the majority of the population participates in Buddhism and cremation ceremonies, however, some people of Chinese-Thai ancestry will participate in burial ceremonies. Belief in the paranormal and ghosts is fairly common overall in Thailand.

“Thirty six tables of Chinese food in a quality banquet atmosphere were set up at the Sawang Uttayan Cemetery earlier this week. We then proceeded to entertain the “guests” for about an hour.” Tanawan explained.

Mr. Eakkaluck Undee, 35, a banquet worker in Chonburi, told associated Thai press, “I have been in the Chinese banquet business for more than 18 years. No one has ever ordered a banquet dinner for ghosts before. This is the first time for me or anyone else I know in the industry. It was a bit unusual and gave me a queasy feeling to be in a cemetery setting up tables and serving “guests”.”

“After finishing the banquet ceremony, the food was given to poor people in the area as unfortunately it appeared the ghosts could not actually consume earthly substances.” Eakkaluck added.

The banquet featured no expenses spared, with quality silverware, food, drinks, and even entertainment and speeches from the living wishing those who had passed on well.

In February, another group of residents held a film festival for ghosts in Chonburi as well. You can read more about that here:
