Pattaya to proceed with waterless traditional “Big Songkran” day on April 19th, officials say can be just as fun without water fights, concerts, dancing, drinking, and partying

Pattaya, Thailand-

After a decision by the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration today that Songkran water fights and splashing of water would be banned this year Pattaya City confirmed they will still move forward with a waterless festival on April 19th.

Festivals in Naklua and other areas will also take place on April 18th and 20th.

This year officials said they will be focusing on educating the public about the traditions of the festival and Buddhism, with displays of religious artifacts on Beach Road, cultural displays, traditional outfits, unique food vendors, and ability to pay respect and merit to monks and elders of the community. While concerts are not entirely banned and some may take place crowd control measures will take place severely limiting those who attend and dancing would likely be prohibited.

According to city leaders at a meeting today confirming the event would still take place they attempted to reassure the public that despite no parties, water fights, concerts, foam parties, dancing, or other events that the event could still be fun and rewarding.

The question if people would be able to drink alcohol was not immediately made clear but authorities continued to state that the focus was on traditional activities and sharing Thai culture.

As for the Ramayana Wonder Wave Songkran festival it will likely proceed as the event will have significant Covid-19 precautions, crowd control, and measures.

As for private venues water splashing in general is banned so the days of chaotic buildup to the big day will not be able to take place this year, according to officials. Police will be enforcing the no water splashing rule around the area.
