Thailand’s Public Health Ministry confirmed yesterday, March 14th, that AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine is safe and the inoculation can continue to proceed, as approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and European Medicines Agency.
The vaccine has also reportedly no evidence associated with blood clots, according to world renowned organizations.
Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the Department of Disease Control, told the press that the Ministry of Public Health had followed up and sought resourceful information from relevant departments since last Friday, regarding blood clots reports in a vaccinated European patient.
Both WHO and the European Medicines Agency mutually confirmed that the AstraZeneca vaccine was safe and there was no strong evidence that could point to the association of the vaccine with thromboembolism cases.
The director-general further explained that blood clots could dangerously happen when they clogged the blood flow of the vessels in the lungs, causing the failure of gas oxygen exchange and eventually death.
However, according to reports, Thai people have a lower risk than Europeans for the occurrence of blood clots in the blood vessels.
Regarding the first phase of Sinovac’s Covid-19 vaccination in Thailand, a number of 44,963 shots were given to target groups in 13 provinces from February 28th to March 13th. The inoculation was nearly complete in many provinces, except for the provinces of Pathum Thani, Samut Sakhon, and Bangkok that will have their target groups vaccinated by the end of next week as scheduled.
