Chonburi –
A Chonburi resident damaged three other cars and overturned his own in a major accident over the past weekend that authorities suspect was caused by the usage of illegal drugs.
The Mueang Chonburi Police was notified of the accident on Saturday, March 6th, over this past weekend on the Bypass Road in the Baan Suan sub-district around sunset.
Police and emergency responders arrived at the scene to find an overturned black sedan lying in the middle of the road. Three other vehicles were damaged nearby, although their drivers were not injured.
Inside, rescue staff found an injured man, Mr. Chatchai Thaijiam, 35. The man was stated to be uncooperative with rescue workers and first responders. Emergency staff stated the man was acting “suspiciously and appeared to be searching his damaged vehicle for an unknown possession.”
Mueang Chonburi police forcefully removed the driver from the vehicle, later finding a small packet that is under investigation.
One of the other drivers whose vehicle was hit during the accident, Mr. Komsan Panklang, told police, “Mr. Chatchai crashed into the back of a pickup truck at speed, causing me to crash into him and causing a further pile-up.”
Chatchai claimed that a tire on his car exploded, causing the accident. However, an inspection of his vehicle showed that no tires were damaged. Chatchai reportedly denied ownership of the packet found in his vehicle and, according to police, appeared to be under the influence of drugs or other substances.
Chatchai was taken into custody by the Mueang Chonburi police to be tested for potential drug usage, although charges have not yet been filed. The results of the drug test were not immediately released to the local press.
