Bangkok –
A total of 18 pro-democracy demonstrators arrived at the Criminal Court in Bangkok this morning, February 15th, for hearing alleged charges for staging a two-day protest rally in September of last year.
Three prominent protest leaders, namely Panusaya “Rung” Sithijirawattanakul, Panupong “Mike Rayong” Jadnok, and Jatupat “Pai” Boonpattararaksa, were charged for Section 112, als known as Thailand’s lese majeste law.
The other protesters were charged for Section 116 of sedition following the major pro-democracy demonstration on September 19th and the 20th of 2020 at Sanamlung in the capital.
Panusaya told reporters that every demonstrator being charged today had no worries at all because they had gained a lot of encouragement from pro-democracy supporters. Although they believe that 80 percent of the cases will turn out to be like four previously detained protest leaders, there was still a 20 percent chance that the Criminal court and prosecutors’ orders will be determined on judicial principles and make reasonable decisions.
However, the prosecutors later announced the postponement of their decision whether to charge the pro-democracy activists to March 8th. All of them were not detained and were let go two hours later. Of note, Jatupat “Pai” Boonpattararaksa, was not present as he was walking from Korat to Bangkok for the hearings as a symbolic protest with supporters. It is possible an arrest warrant could be issued for the act, but at this time has not happened.
