Bangkok –

Bangkok’s Air Quality and Noise Management Division reported this morning, February 4th, that PM2.5 dust particles have exceeded the standard in several areas of Bangkok, reaching the level that could potentially cause long-term health issues.

According to the real-time record on the department’s website,  air quality in 54 areas of the capital could begin to affect health, with the highest PM2.5 level between 51 to 78 µg/m3.

The areas where the PM2.5 amount exceeds the standard are, for example, Dindaung district, Prakanong district, Ratchathewi district, Dusit district, Phaya Thai District, Don Mueng District, Thon Buri District, Huai Khwang District, Ladphrao District, Lat Krabang District, Pathumwan District, etc.

The air quality in the remaining 19 districts is stably in the medium standard. However, locals are advised to reduce outdoor activities, close their windows to avoid dirty outdoor air, and use protective gear. Those who have any symptoms of coughing, shortness of breath, or eye irritation, are strongly advised to stay inside the premises and refrain from outdoor activities.

Despite the fact that open burning, which is believed to be one of the major air pollution sources, is technically illegal by authorities across Thailand, the level of PM2.5 dust particles and pollution smog has not yet to be reduced for the past several years.

The air pollution in Pattaya has also been affected, with local authorities saying they were aware of the problem but claiming that the majority of the issue was beyond their control and coming from outside of the Pattaya area.
