The following is our weekly feature in which we highlight the top five local stories in our area, Pattaya and Chonburi, for the past week.
These are chosen by our editorial team and are designed for our readers to get a quick “catch-up” of important stories they may have missed as we publish many stories daily and it is easy to lose track of important events or changes in our area. We do national recaps in a separate article.
They are in no particular order of importance. The following list is for the week from January 24th to the 31st, 2021.
1. Cancer survivor, single mother, and widow becomes trash collector in Pattaya area after Covid-19 crisis in Thailand
This story had high levels of interest last week and showed the human side of the Covid-19 situation in Pattaya and how the crisis affects many people, not just bars and nightlife like some on social media seem to think.
2. Chonburi Public Relations release new order around easing Covid-19 measures and closures, effective Monday, February 1st
Well, the biggest story of the week here as after a month of closure Chonburi finally eased restrictions around closures of many places especially entertainment venues.
3. During Pattaya school closure for Chonburi, one young boy starts his own food cart to help his parents during Covid-19
Another human story that did very well last week with positive feedback from our readers overall.
4. Hotels closed in Chonburi so staff can collect government financial aid
This article confused many people who didn’t understand the closure of hotels was not due to any Covid-19 situation but rather to allow staff to collect financial aid from the Thai government and is an optional closure. Many hotels and guest houses remain open in the area but some are closed so if you are coming to Chonburi check in advance.
5. Walking Street underground construction cable project starts
The long-delayed Walking Street project to move cables underground that has been an eyesore for ages has begun. Although the timing isn’t perfect due to bars opening once again after a four-week closure most agree the work needs to be done and the future results will be worth it.
