Chief of Staff of Royal Thai Armed Forces visits Chonburi to inspect field hospitals and overall Covid-19 plans, including exit strategy

Chonburi-

The Chief of Staff of the Royal Thai Armed Forces arrived in Chonburi this afternoon, January 10th, 2021, to inspect several field hospitals as well as meet with the Governor to discuss the current situation, especially in Si Racha, and the plan to resolve the situation.

The Chief of Staff also reportedly asked about the exit strategy for the Eastern Economic Corridor area and in particular, Chonburi which is a valuable part of the Thai economy and which cannot afford, according to the Chief, a long period of Covid-19 related closures and shutdowns especially in regards to travel restrictions. The area, Pattaya in particular, has been devastated by Covid-19 and lack of tourism with as many as 80% percent plus of businesses in Pattaya City closed due to virus control regulations and measures.

Gen. Suphot Malaniyom joined Chonburi Governor Pakarathorn Thienchai this afternoon to review the response plan as well as field hospitals.

The visit was not open to the press and the exact specifics of what was decided or reviewed was not revealed openly, however, the Ministry of Public Health has made it clear that resolving the situation with Covid-19, especially in regards to a cluster of infections stemming from a bar/brewery in Si Racha that has now infected over thirty people and is the largest current source of infections in the region, is a top priority.

The Ministry of Public Health has said on several occasions that they have a goal of resolving the situation in the Eastern provinces, currently considered “highly controlled” by the end of January.
