Bangkok, Thailand-
Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) announced 67 road deaths, 642 people injured and 652 accidents in the country over the New Year’s Eve period this morning.
The day is considered the third of what the Kingdom refers to as the “Seven Dangerous Days of Driving”.
Of note, 85.95% of the accidents involved motorbikes. 38.04% were directly attributed to driving while intoxicated. The majority of accidents, 29,75%, happened between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM.
63.65% were attributed to taking place on straight roads. The DDPM doesn’t specifically break down speed into their charts and presentations but stated that was a high factor, especially on straight roads.
Of note, the DDPM also only classifies a death as one that occurs at the scene of an accident. If a death later occurs at a hospital from an injury, it is not directly placed into the accident death statistics.
