Thailand-
The Governor of Samut Sakhon, the epicenter of a recent cluster of Covid-19 infections in Thailand, is reportedly on a ventilator but in “good” condition according to doctors.
The Governor, Verasak Vichitsangsri, 58, was diagnosed with Covid-19 on Monday of this week after getting a sore throat and and cough and was moved to Siriraj Hospital for treatment. Breathing assistance will reportedly be needed for at least three days and close treatment for several weeks, according to a family member of the Governor.
Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin, the spokesperson for the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration, or CCSA, said the governor remained in good spirits and was a fighter. Dr. Taweesin said his infection had nothing to do with setting up a field hospital in the province, a fact that many Thai residents had been strongly opposed to.
The Governor had spent significant time in and around a series of migrant dormitories that is the source of the recent cluster of infections in and around Thailand. The dormitories remain under a “hard lockdown” and surrounded by barbed wire and guards with thousands of migrant workers inside. The Governor had also spent time with Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul the day prior to his diagnosis. Anutin has tested negative for the virus so far but is self isolating out of precaution.
