Thailand’s top medical professor and virologist questions government in Covid-19 vaccine process, urges government to speed up purchase contract

Bangkok –

Dr. Yong Poovorawan, a medical professor in pediatric hepatology at the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University, urged the Thai government to buy Covid-19 vaccines from various candidates in order to speed up the vaccine distribution in the Kingdom.

The doctor stated online that there are now six candidates of the Covid-19 vaccine registered around the world; three from China, one from Russia, one from America, and one from an American-German company.

But Thailand has focused solely on the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine from the United Kingdom, which was just completed today according to media reports. The reason to do so is not yet known, according to the doctor.

He wrote: “Thailand should not rely only on one company since there are now many approved coronavirus vaccines to choose from, even those from China, Europe, Russia, and America. This is an urgent condition as 80 million doses are needed, so Thailand should decide on more options.”

Dr. Yong also addressed that more than 30 countries, including the European Union, already claimed that a large number of injections will be provided for their citizens nationwide in January 2021. Thailand’s vaccine registration process has to be faster than it is at the moment.

Additionally, he also advised private companies to jointly contribute to work with the public sector in importing vaccinations from abroad since it must be kept at low temperatures under the best condition.

The professor added: “In Singapore, private sectors also give a hand in the vaccination process. Private companies in Thailand should be able to manage it too. It will also reduce the government’s burden and help fasten the vaccine distribution to Thai people at general hospitals nationwide.”
