BMA announces closures of four high-risk establishments and activities in Bangkok over New Year period to slow spread of Covid-19

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has ordered the closure of four types of high-risk establishments and activities from December 29th to at least January 4, 2021, in order to prevent a possible ‘super spread’ of Covid-19 Coronavirus in Bangkok.

The venues in question include horse race tracks, cock-fighting, any related kind of animal games venues, and service/entertainment venues such as massage parlors, karaokes and venues with live music/dancing/lighting shows like nightclubs and gogos* (See below). Pubs, bars and restaurants appear to be able to stay open with Covid-19 measures and must not have dancing, light shows or live music and must not sell alcohol after midnight. (Editor’s note: We use the word appear as there have been conflicting statements from government officials and various Thai media and confusion amongst business owners. We expect more clear information soon and will update as so.)

If the regulations could potentially reduce the number of Covid-19 cases in the city, the venues may be opened on January 5th. If not, the regulations will continue to be in use until further notice, according to the BMA announcement.

The service venues that are closed* are allowed to adapt themselves to a restaurant by following intensive health measures of the Public Health Ministry. Social distancing, crowd controlling, body temperature checking, and related measures are mandatory during the disease control regulations. The Pattaya News/TPN notes there have been confusion on these measures on some social media, mainly due to some contradicting statements but at this time alcohol is not banned and a small bar may stay open based on the information given.
