Bangkok –
The Ministry of Education today, December 23rd, has announced the postponement of Children’s Day activities by a week due to concerns of a new domestic outbreak of Covid-19 Coronavirus.
Thailand’s Children’s Day is annually held on the second Saturday of January every year. This year was planned for January 9, 2021, however, it is approved to be postponed initially for a week, Education Minister Natthaphon Teepasuwan told the Associated Press.
“A new wave of Covid-19 outbreaks in many provinces have widely affected people’s lives and raised concerns among Thai society. Therefore, the Ministry decided to postpone all activities and celebrations of the National Children’s Day 2021 on January 9th as a large group of people were expected to be coming from various areas to the capital which would be a risk for the possible spread of the Covid-19 virus.” said Natthaphon.
Initially, the activities will be postponed for 1 week but the Ministry will closely monitor the situation before officially confirming the date of the event later.
Prior to this, the Ministry also announced the cancellation of the O-NET mandatory examination for Grade 6 (P.6), grade 9 (M.3) nationwide due to the pandemic and the stress that the situation may have caused to Thai students.
Additionally, Bangkok has announced the closure of 437 schools and 292 child centers in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area for at least 12 days in order to help stop the potential spread of Covid-19.
