Bangkok –

The Thai cabinet yesterday, December 1, approved the Ministry of Transport’s proposal of a higher speed limit of up to 120 kilometers per hour for cars on national and rural highways.

A speed limit of 90 km./h. is set for trucks weighing over 2,200 kilograms and buses carrying more than 15 passengers while a limit of 100 km./h. is allowed for buses with 7 to 15 passengers.

A limit of 65 km./h. applies with cars towing another vehicle, small four-wheelers, and three-wheelers. School buses are only allowed to exceed 80 km./h. Small motorcycles are also limited to exceed 80 km./h. while those with 400cc engines and 35-kilowatt engines and above are limited to 100 km./h.

According to the proposal, the regulation is applicable on two lanes of highways in the same direction and traffic islands with barriers and without U-turn points. The speed limit for vehicles driving in the right lane of all highways must not be less than 100 km./h.

Deputy government spokeswoman Traisuree Taisaranakul said after the cabinet meeting that the regulation of speed limits is expected to improve traffic flow and to potentially solve traffic jams in particular areas on the highways.

In case of traffic signs, drivers are required to abide by the maximum speed limit addressed in the sign. All vehicles should strictly follow other traffic warning signs and should drive carefully in the caution area, the spokeswoman concluded.
