Thailand’s Ministry of Transport has implemented a new regulation regarding additional baggage fees for passengers who are hiring any taxi-meters registered in Bangkok, effective on Tuesday, November 17.
In short, the taxi drivers are now allowed to charge for items of luggage when being hired by their passengers but other carry-on items such as handbags, computer bags, backpacks, and other personal items are excluded.
The term “carry-on” item refers to a piece of baggage that can be carried under the care of a passenger alone, not in a trunk compartment, during the journey. Wheelchairs and other mobility aids such as canes are not considered luggage, according to the Royal Gazette announcement.
The fees for luggage are varied according to its size which is categorized into four additional charges as follows:
- If the linear size of luggage is more than 26 inches, it will be charged at a rate not exceeding 20 baht per piece.
- If the linear size of luggage is not more than 26 inches and is not carry-on baggage, the first 2 pieces of them will not be charged. They will be charged at a rate not exceeding 20 baht per piece will be included in the third piece.
- Musical instruments and/or sports equipment such as golf bags, bicycles, and windsurfing equipment with its linear size more than 50 inches. The service fee will be charged at a rate not exceeding 100 baht per piece.
- Packages of loaded goods, items, equipment, tools either with or without boxes with its linear size more than 50 inches. The service fee for each container will be charged at a rate not exceeding 100 baht per piece.
Additionally, the linear measurement of every luggage does not include wheels or related attached mobility devices.
