Thailand is ready to collaborate with South Korea and Mekong countries to strengthen public health measures under the Mekong-Republic of Korea Cooperation Fund to combat the Covid-19 coronavirus.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-O’Cha has attended a video conference of the second Mekong-Republic of Korea (RoK) Summit with representatives from Mekong countries, including Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and the President of the Republic of Korea, Moon Jae-in, this morning, November 13.

During the conference, Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc had highlighted the significance of the first Mekong-RoK Summit held last year as its adoption of the Mekong-Han River Declaration had resulted in the strength of regional connectivity and sustainable development among all member countries.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in then addressed the Mekong-Han River Declaration as a new step in cooperation between both sides in various areas, including cooperation in public health, promoting trade, regional connectivity, and jointly combating the Covid-19 coronavirus.

The country will provide 10 million USD for developing countries in the disease fight to ensure that residents of the Mekong countries can access the vaccine, the President stated.

Prime Minister Prayuth stated that Thailand is ready to support the cooperative elevation of a strategic partnership through the “New Southern Policy Plus” and to strengthen a sustainable partnership between Mekong countries and the Republic of Korea.

He also stressed the two key priorities for the framework of cooperation in all countries during and after the epidemic of Covid-19. The first one is to build cooperation in public health by sharing experience in disease prevention and control as well as providing safe and effective vaccines at reasonable prices for every person in the region.

The second priority is to reconnect supply chains in sub-regional areas that have been disrupted during the Covid-19 outbreak. This, according to the Prime Minister, will provide economic recovery in small and vulnerable business groups and MSMEs entrepreneurs, leading to the expansion of investment in the country and potentially connecting sub-regional supply chains to a regional and eventually a global supply chain.

The Pattaya News notes that the Mekong-Republic of Korea (RoK) cooperation being discussed in the summit today was initially raised at the 13th ASEAN-RoK Summit in October 2010 during the period of Korean President Lee Myung Bank to enhance political and economic ties between Mekong countries and the RoK, to narrow the development gap, and to support the building of the ASEAN Community.

The summit has identified seven priority cooperation areas, namely culture and tourism, human resources development, agriculture and rural development, infrastructure, information and communications, environment, and non-traditional challenges.
