The Thai Cabinet has approved an extension of the service life of taxis from 9 to 12 years to reduce the financial burden for taxi drivers who have been affected by the economic downturn during the Covid-19 situation.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek revealed to the press after the cabinet meeting yesterday, November 10, that the service life of all taxis carrying no more than 7 passengers will be extended for up to 12 years.

Those taxis that are used for more than 9 years must be checked four times a year and must pass all safety standards to prevent excessive emission pollution in public vehicles.

According to the Spokeswoman, the ministerial regulation has been approved to assist at least 80,000 taxi drivers to recover from the financial problems affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Additionally, this official approval is a revision of the ministerial regulation initially being proposed by the Ministry of Transport on September 15, 2020, stating the extension of the service life of passenger cars carrying no more than 7 passengers would extend from 9 years to 12 years.

This extension reverts earlier regulations to shorten the shelf life of taxis for safety and pollution reasons. It is expected to last about three years.
