Thailand’s Criminal Court overturns Government order to suspend broadcasting on 4 media sites and student activist Facebook page

Bangkok –

Thailand’s Criminal Court today has overturned the cases of shutting down the Voice TV media channel and broadcasting suspension of 3 media agencies and a major student activist Facebook page, filed by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society and the Royal Thai Police under the severe state of emergency.

The media sources include Voice TV, Prachatai.com, The Reporters, The Standard, and student activist group Free Youth which have been live broadcasting and updating on social media platforms coverage of the student-led protests for the past few months, leading to the government order to silence of all of the media platforms in question on Monday.

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society had later filed another report to close down “all platforms” of Voice TV to the Court yesterday, October 20, stating that the platform had contained what the Government believes is misleading information that is affecting national stability or order as mentioned in the new emergency decree.

Many journalism-based communities and other media press have responded in disappointment and anger and have also asked the Government to rescind the order and respect the fundamental right of the free press.

After the issues were taken into consideration, the Court has dismissed the Digital Ministry’s order to take Voice TV offline and has rejected its request to block three other online news sites and a Facebook page operated by pro-democracy activists.

According to the verdict, the complaints did not cite any clear wrongdoing which caused the order to be invalid. Therefore, the Court had to overturn the Digital Ministry’s and Royal Thai Police’s orders.
