Chachoengsao, Thailand –
19 passengers were killed and 36 people were injured after a two-story passenger bus collided with a cargo train in Chachoengsao this morning, October 11.
The passenger bus, which carried a total of 65 passengers on board, was departing from Samut Prakan to a temple in Chachoengsao for a religious ceremony to mark the end of Buddhist Lent when the fatal accident occurred.
It is believed that the bus driver was driving very early in the morning and not familiar with the route. He was reportedly not aware of the railway track since there was no train barrier, causing the bus to smash into the train around 8:54 AM today.
The bus was seen overturned on its side and its top was ripped off. Many dead and injured passengers and their belongings were found scattered by the train tracks.
A team of rescue workers was detached to the process of searching and rescuing victims from the accident. A total of 36 injured were rushed to and treated at a local hospital.
Chief district officer Prathuang Yukasem told the Associated Press that the number of casualties and injured had been recently confirmed this afternoon. The relevant police agencies are also investigating and determining the exact cause of the crash.
Meanwhile, Prathuang Yukasem has also alerted the State Railway of Thailand to urgently install a train barrier in the area to prevent any possible reoccurrence.
