A reportedly intoxicated driver has escaped injury after his vehicle crashed into a power pole this morning while he was trying to pick up his mobile phone.
Captain Tanya Autthong of the Pattaya City Police was notified of the accident at 4:30 AM this morning on North Pattaya Road in Naklua.
Police, emergency responders and The Pattaya News arrived at the scene to find a damaged sedan on North Pattaya road.
The driver, Phuthep Thongmanee, 27, admitted to police that he dropped his mobile phone on the floor of his vehicle while driving and using the mobile device, which is against Thai law.
He tried to pick it up but lost control of his vehicle before crashing into a power pole in the middle of North Pattaya road.
Pattaya Police detained the suspect and took him to the police station for additional breath alcohol tests and potential legal charges. They did not reveal his exact preliminary blood alcohol test other than stating that the suspect registered as being intoxicated at the scene of the accident.
