National Institute of Development Administration – NIDA and the Data Protection Excellence (DPEX) Centre launch Thailand’s first Data Protection Officer Hands-On Programme & Professional Certification

Local certification awarded by NIDA and international certification awarded by International Association of Privacy Professionals

Bangkok, Thailand, 20 February, 2020 – NIDA and the DPEX Centre, the education and research arm of Singapore-based data protection firm, Straits Interactive announced the launch of Thailand’s first Data Protection Officer (DPO) Hands-On course and international certification courses from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). The local course focuses on how to comply operationally with the Thai Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) and will be rolled out on 17th March 2020. It is targeted at both data protection officers and other compliance, legal, and information security professionals. Towards the second half of 2020, participants will have the option of progressing towards international certification by the International Association of Privacy Professionals by training and sitting the exam for, for example, its Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM).

The announcement follows on the back of NIDA and Straits Interactive signing a Memorandum of Understanding recently under which NIDA joins the DPEX Centre, a network of universities in ASEAN. This network includes Singapore’s Singapore Management University’s SMU Academy, the Philippines’ De La Salle University and Malaysia’s International Islamic University of Malaysia who all work to promote data protection excellence in ASEAN.

Said Prof Dr Kamphol Panyagometh, President of NIDA, “With Thailand’s data protection law in place, we foresee a need for many working professionals keen to upgrade their knowledge in data protection. As a leading academic institution, we are proud to be the first university in Thailand to offer a local and international data protection qualification jointly with Straits Interactive and the DPEX Centre.”

In 2016, the IAPP estimated that as many as 75,000 DPO positions will be created in response to the GDPR around the globe. Singapore had also forecasted a shortage of a minimum of 10,000 DPOs.

Mr. J. Trevor Hughes, President and CEO of the International Association of Privacy Professionals, said, “With the emergence of new legislation in Thailand, we are pleased to see the expansion of resources and access to the CIPM certification, the world’s first and only certification in privacy programme management. With this certification, data protection professionals will be equipped to adopt global best practices and operationalise their data protection programmes.”

ASEAN countries have been progressively rolling out their country’s data protection laws, making it essential for those who manage data protection to be adequately prepared for their roles.

Mr. Kevin Shepherdson, CEO, Straits Interactive and Head of the DPEX Centre, said, “One of the regional trends that we predict for 2020 is the increased demand for data protection officers and expertise due to new data protection laws and their enforcement. With the new Thai PDPA in force, we will see an increasing demand for qualified and certified data protection professionals in order to help organisations comply with the Thai PDPA. We are happy to share our expertise and experience with NIDA in promoting data protection in Thailand.”
