Thai Commerce Ministry to stop price gouging on facemasks, ensure higher supply to meet increased demand

BANGKOK(NNT) – Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit has instructed provincial commerce officers nationwide, to check vendors offering respirator masks, in a bid to ensure fair trading.

According to Permanent Secretary for Commerce Boonyarit Kalayanamit, the instruction particularly directs officials to check the prices and the number of face masks being sold in the upper part of the North, and in popular tourism provinces.

The permanent secretary told local commerce offices to direct local vendors to clearly display price tags, and refrain from unjust price hikes of sought-after face masks, while informing consumers of the locations of merchants offering respirators.

Permanent Secretary Boonyarit further indicated that the Department of Internal Trade is discussing with the manufacturers of local face masks, production of more stock to meet the current surging demand, as the coronavirus and air pollution situations intensify.
