BANGKOK(NNT) – This morning, levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) in most areas of Bangkok and vicinity exceeded the safe threshold of 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air. People in Bangkok are advised to wear protective masks to prevent inhalation of dust when going outside, while sensitive groups should avoid outdoor activities at this time.
PM2.5 levels in greater Bangkok have risen from yesterday and exceeded safety standards at 50 air-quality monitoring stations, supervised by the Department of Pollution Control and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), with levels measured from 42 to 109 micrograms per cubic meter earlier today. The air quality indicator turned orange in 42 locations and red in six other areas. An orange warning indicates unhealthy conditions, while a red warning reflects very unhealthy conditions. People in the capital and neighboring provinces are advised to wear protective masks, avoid outdoor activities and closely follow the air situation.
Dust levels also increased in northern Thailand, with PM2.5 levels measured from 29 to 87 micrograms per cubic meter. Affected areas included Mae Sot district in Tak province, Muang Phayao district in Phayao province, Muang Lampang and Mae Mo districts of Lampang province, Muang Lamphun district of Lamphun province, Muang Phrae district in Phrae province and Muang Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai province.
