At 9:40 PM on January 6th, 2020, police in the Bang Rak district of Bangkok responded to a call of seven gunshots fired at a white Lexus on Surawong Road that belongs to former Thai Immigration Chief Surachate Hakparn, also known by his nickname Big Joke.
Surachate, who is now a special advisor to the Prime Minister, was not in the vehicle at the time of the shooting and was eating at a restaurant nearby.
Police Col Duangchot Suwanarat, the director of the Bang Rak Police station, confirmed the incident to the news media and confirmed that Surachate was safe.

Col. Duangchot stated that CCTV is being reviewed and witnesses being questioned as the shooting happened on a busy road with many people present.
Col. Duangchot stated the suspects will be hunted to the fill extent of the law. He did not speculate what could have led to the shooting and Surachate did not answer any questions about the shooting.
Surachate, widely known as Big Joke during his time as Immigration Chief, was widely known in his former role and consistently dominated the headlines in Thailand.
