Chonburi –

An adult dolphin has been pronounced dead after getting stuck in a fishing net in the Chonburi province of Thailand yesterday afternoon, December 18th, 2019.

Rescue workers and local residents attempted to assist the dolphin which was stuck in fishing net near the shore of a local beach.

The rescue workers had tried to free the dolphin for close to thirty minutes from the net. Unfortunately, the dolphin did not survive the incident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Staffers at the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) told The Pattaya News that it was a male Irrawaddy dolphin which is classified as a vulnerable mammal in terms of conservation status.

The dolphin was recorded as 2.27 metres long and more than 100 kilograms. The exact age of the dolphin was undetermined at the time of this press report.

This incident takes place just two days after two dolphins have been sighted near Jomtien beach in a video that went viral on social media. It is unknown if this dolphin is one of the two dolphins sighted in the video.
