BANGKOK(NNT) – The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018, performed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) which evaluates 15-year-old students skills in sciences, mathematics, and reading, shows Chinese and Singaporean students score the highest in all categories, while Thai students received a lower reading score this year.
The Minister of Education, Nataphol Teepsuwan has presided over a release ceremony of PISA 2018 scores, at which he joined an online conference with the OECD on the PISA 2018 evaluation, involving some 600,000 students from 79 countries.
The assessment was performed in Thailand in August 2018 with 8,633 students from 290 schools participating.
The latest PISA scores show that students from four cities and provinces of China, namely Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang, as well as students from Singapore received the highest scores in all three categories, while China, Singapore, Macao, Hong Kong, and Estonia are the top performers in reading.
In this assessment, Thai students received an average score of 393, well below the OECD’s average score of 487; while the average mathematics score for Thai students is 419, below the OECD’s average of 489; while the average sciences score of 426, was also below the OECD’s average score of 489. These results reflect 16 scores decreased in reading, and 3 and 4 scores increased in mathematics and sciences respectively.
