Cold weather spell attracting many domestic and foreign tourists to the far North of Thailand

CHIANG MAI(NNT) – The upper part of Thailand is experiencing cold weather with strong winds. That is favorable to tourism at Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai where the temperature was reported at minus one degree Celsius, with frost on the grass.

The temperature at Doi Inthanon, the country’s highest point, in Chom Thong district of Chiang Mai, dropped overnight to minus one degree Celsius this morning. Nearby, the temperature was reported to have dropped to 2 degrees Celsius at Kew Mae Parn scenic point and to 6 degrees Celsius at Doi Inthanon national park office.

Vasant Chanthathep, assistant chief of the national park, suggested tourists not light fires in open spaces, and only do so in a stove. However, tourists are strongly advised not to take a stove into a tent to keep themselves warm because carbon dioxide from the fire can cause death by suffocation.

Elsewhere, villagers of Pua district of Nan province lit fires to keep themselves warm as the temperature dropped to 2 to 5 degrees Celsius. Provincial authorities have handed out blankets to some of the local people, while others are yet to be provided with such protection.

The Meteorological Department has forecast the upper part of Thailand receiving more cold weather with strong winds and temperatures of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. The sky is clear and sunny by day. Plains in the northern and northeastern regions are also cold with the temperature as low as 6 to 15 degrees Celsius. Mountainous areas of the northern and northeastern regions are also cold with the temperature as low as 1 to 8 degrees Celsius. The central and eastern regions as well as Bangkok and its outlying provinces are cool to cold, with temperatures of 12 to 19 degrees Celsius. People are advised to guard against the outbreak of fires when trying to stay warm.
