Endangered Leatherback Sea turtle found dead on Rayong Beach, fourth dead turtle in area in a month

Rayong-

A Leatherback sea turtle found dead with plastic in its stomach and a missing flipper on Rayong beach this morning, July 12th, 2019.

The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources Department (DMCR) reports that they were notified by local residents that a large dead sea turtle was found on a beach in Rayong.

The leatherback sea turtle is believed to be around 10 years old. It is 79 centimetres wide and 123 centimetres long.

No microchip was found on it, which are commonly used to track many endangered sea turtles in the area.

Its right front flipper was missing and multiple wounds were found on its body. It is believed that the turtle was killed by a boat propeller.

However, an autopsy shows that some plastic was also found inside the turtle’s intestine.
